Employers' Liability Tracing Office

The Employers’ Liability Tracing Office (ELTO) is an Insurance Industry-wide initiative to help those who have suffered injury or disease in the workplace trace relevant Employers’ Liability (EL) insurers through a centralised database of EL insurance records (ELD).

Members have currently joined ELTO on a voluntary basis and almost 90% of the market has already joined as ELTO members. ELTO’s members will be required to supply policy data to the ELD on all new and renewed EL policies from 1st April 2012.

This additional information is mandatory and includes the following:-

  • Policy name
  • Address
  • Insurer and policy number
  • Cover start date and cover end date
  • The name of each subsidiary company insured under the same policy
  • The Employers’ Reference Number (ERN) for both the policyholder and any subsidiary company insured by the same policy.

Consequently we, as Brokers, will be seeking your ERN and those of any subsidiary companies insured under your Employers’ Liability Insurance.

We understand that only a tiny minority of employers will not have an ERN. Your ERN is printed on mandatory documents including the P45, P60, P11D and on most payslips. We will, of course, contact you nearer the time to obtain the necessary detail from you.

The formation of ELTO should not distract you from the necessity to keep a log of past Employers’ Liability Insurers going back for as long a period of possible. Your log should also apply to any Company that has joined you by takeover, merger etc.
